On 11 February 2025, the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS), in partnership with the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), hosted a Pre-AU Summit Seminar under the theme “Can the AU Reposition Africa in a Changing Global Governance Landscape?” The seminar provided a platform for an in-depth discussion on Africa’s evolving role in the global system, examining key political, economic, and security challenges.
Key Insights from the Seminar
The discussions featured insights from renowned scholars, policymakers and practitioners, including Prof. Patrick Lumumba, Janah Ncube, Prof. Thomas Tieku, and Dr. Paul-Simon Handy.
Repositioning Africa in Global Governance
Prof. Patrick Lumumba delivered a keynote address that critically examined Africa’s historical and contemporary struggles with external influence. He underscored the lingering impact of colonial legacies and the continent’s continued economic and political dependencies. Highlighting the AU’s financial reliance on external donors, he emphasised the need for self-sufficiency and bold leadership in shaping Africa’s global position.
Governance, Security, and Leadership Challenges
Panel discussions explored pressing issues on the AU agenda, including governance, food security, youth unemployment, and conflict resolution. Janah Ncube highlighted the paradox of Africa’s abundant arable land amidst persistent food insecurity, while also pointing to the challenges facing Africa’s young population. Prof. Thomas Tieku and Dr. Paul-Simon Handy addressed AU leadership challenges and the continent’s security crises, stressing the need for a more assertive and effective AU in addressing regional conflicts.
Way Forward
The seminar concluded with a call for decisive action in key areas:
- Strengthening the AU’s financial and institutional independence.
- Investing in youth and education to harness Africa’s demographic dividend.
- Enhancing Africa’s role in global governance by prioritising continental integration and unity.
- Ensuring a more proactive and responsive AU in conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
As Africa navigates a rapidly shifting global landscape, the discussions reaffirmed the urgent need for the AU to take the lead in defining the continent’s future.
