The Sahel has experienced one of the longest multi-layered crises in Africa. The recent expansion in the activities of violent extremist groups has added to the region’s vulnerabilities. As it gains traction, violent extremism reinforces existing security challenges and exacerbates threats such as organised crime and illicit trade.

The crisis in the Sahel has deepened in the face of multiple national, regional and international interventions. This seminar will discuss the adequacy of the crisis management approaches adopted by the various actors involved.

This event is co-hosted by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) with the support of the governments of Norway, Niger and Estonia. Simultaneous English–French interpretation will be provided.
