Call for Applications open now: Joint MA and PhD Program Global Studies: Peace and Security in Africa

10 December, 2025

Have you ever dreamed of living and studying across two continents and truly experiencing what it means to be global? We have what you look for: the Universities of Leipzig and Addis Ababa offer you a unique joint degree in Global Studies: Peace and Security in Africa, available at both Master and PhD levels.

About the Program

Launched in 2012, this innovative study course is the result of a German-Ethiopian partnership between Leipzig’s Global and European Studies Institute (GESI) and Addis Ababa’s Centre for Peace and Security Studies (CPSS). It combines an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary study of globalization and its complex dynamics, with a special focus on peace and security issues in Africa. Entirely taught in English, the program involves three terms studying in Addis Ababa and one term in Leipzig. Our fundamental approach is grounded in thinking globally, giving special consideration to regional perspectives on globalization processes and the multifaceted aspects of peace and security in Africa. This promotes a deep understanding of the continent’s specific issues and challenges by engaging with the interplay of historical, political, social, cultural, economic, and other dynamics that shape peace and security scenarios in Africa. The program offers a first-hand study and research experience of excellence at African and German universities, to equip you with a set of theoretical knowledge and practical skills setting up a solid ground both for professional and academic careers.
