Reports to: IPSS Director

The Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) is engaged in research, training, and policy engagement in peace, security, and governance across Africa. The Junior Researcher will support ongoing research and training programs, contribute to knowledge production, and assist in the implementation of academic and capacity-building activities.

Position Summary

The Junior Researcher will support research design, data collection, analysis, report writing, and training-related activities within assigned projects. The role is suited for early-career researchers with a strong academic foundation in Peace and Security Studies or related fields.

Key Responsibilities

Research Support

  • Assist in designing research frameworks, methodologies, and tools; 
  • Conduct literature reviews and desk research on assigned thematic areas; 
  • Support quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis; 
  • Contribute to drafting research papers, policy briefs, and reports; 
  • Maintain organized research databases and documentation systems. 

Training and Capacity Building

  • Support the preparation and delivery of training materials and modules; 
  • Assist in organizing workshops, seminars, and short courses; 
  • Participate in facilitating training sessions where required; 
  • Support evaluation of training outcomes and participant feedback. 

Project and Program Support

  • Assist in implementing academic and capacity-building activities;
  • Support coordination with partners, stakeholders, and field teams; 
  • Contribute to monitoring and reporting requirements; 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Peace and Security Studies or a related field is required;
  • BA or MA students currently working on their MA thesis, as well as recent graduates, are eligible to apply;
  • Strong interest in research and policy analysis in peace and security; 
  • Good understanding of African peace and security dynamics is an advantage; 
  • Strong writing and analytical skills; 
  • Ability to work with quantitative and qualitative research methods is desirable; 
  • Proficiency in MS Office and basic data analysis tools; 
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills; 
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
