Position: Head of Communications
Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS)
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
The Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) is seeking a qualified and experienced professional to serve as Head of Communications. This role is central to strengthening IPSS’s visibility, public engagement, and institutional voice across national, continental, and global platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and implementation of IPSS’s communications strategy;
- Oversee institutional branding, messaging, and public positioning;
- Manage media relations, press releases, and public statements;
- Supervise digital platforms, including website and social media channels;
- Coordinate communication for flagship programs, events, and publications;
- Work closely with research, programs, and leadership teams to ensure consistent and accurate communication;
- Manage the communications team and external service providers where applicable.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, International Relations, Public Relations, or a related field;
- At least 7 years of relevant professional experience, with leadership responsibility in communications;
- Strong writing and editing skills in English; additional languages, particularly French, is an advantage.
- Proven experience in institutional communications, preferably in academia, policy, or international organizations;
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver under tight timelines;
- Familiarity with digital communication tools and media engagement.
