39th AU summit outcomes: does the AU focus on the right priorities?
Download: Concept Note & Agenda
The Post-AU Summit Hybrid Seminar, organized by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS), is a critical reflection on the outcomes of the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly Heads of State and Government, which convened amid geopolitical uncertainty and mounting pressures. The seminar aims to unpack key decisions made at the summit, examine their multidimensional implications across priority areas like peace and security, governance, and economic integration, and assess the AU’s effectiveness in delivering on its commitments, particularly in light of the 2026 theme on “Assuring sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems.” Ultimately, the goal is to generate policy-relevant insights and action-oriented recommendations to strengthen the AU’s response and implementation capacity.
