On Monday 21 March 2022, IPSS, in partnership between UNESCO and the Embassy of Pakistan in Ethiopia, hosted a triplet Public Lecture series under the theme “Cross Border Water Diplomacy” at the Addis Ababa University Faculty of Business and Economics campus Eshetu Chole Conference Hall.
Dr. Yonas Adaye Adeto, Director of IPSS welcomed the audience and introduced the speakers, H.E. Shozab Abbas, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and the African Union, and Dr. Yumiko Yokozeki, Director, UNESCO IICBA.
Ambassador Shozab gave a thorough lecture on the 1960 Indus Basin Treaty and the 2015 Declaration of Principles (DOP). Then, H.E. emphasised the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and compared it with various dams in Egypt and Sudan, the colonial Nile Water Agreements of 1929 and 1959, the Pre-GERD Nile Water Apportionment, and the 2015 Declaration of Principles. Also, he assessed the position of Egypt and Sudan on the GERD dam, what the International Interventions look like, and so on. Ambassador Shozab concluded his presentation by putting insightful recommendations for the three counties.
The Public Lecture Series presented a unique perspective on developing international collaboration on water resources through a comparative analysis.
