SUMMARY:What’s next for the new AU leadership?
DESCRIPTION:Expectations are high that new leaders will improve the African Union’s performance in achieving a secure and stable continent.\nThe AU Commission has a range of pressing issues on its plate\, including implementing flagship initiatives like Silencing the Guns and the Free Movement of Persons. The election this month of new commission leaders coincides with Angola’s assumption of the African Union (AU) Chairperson role. \nThe new leadership group must find sustainable solutions in the face of sluggish AU reform\, tensions between the AU and regional economic communities\, governance deficits in many member states\, and ongoing violent conflicts in several hotspots. \nThis seminar will reflect on expectations of the new AU leadership\, outcomes of the 38th AU summit and priorities for Angola as new AU Assembly chair. \nThis seminar is co-hosted by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS). \nSimultaneous English-French interpretation will be provided. \n \nKeynote address: Amb Mohamed Ibn Chambas\, Chair of the AU High-Level Panel of the Resolution of the Conflict in Sudan and AU High Representative for Silencing the Guns \nModerator: Amb Salah Hammad\, Head\, AGA-APSA Secretariat\, African Union Commission (TBC) \nPanelists: \n\nProf Thomas Tieku\, Politics and International Relations\, King’s University College\, University of Western Ontario\nAngela Naa Afoley Odai\, Head of Diaspora Division\, Citizens and Diaspora Directorate\, African Union\nMoussa Soumahoro\, Researcher\, ISS
