SUMMARY:Evolution of European Military Engagement in Africa: French Troop Withdrawal from the Sahel and Hungary's Strategic Entry into Chad
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nIn the last decade\, the Sahel has become a theater for geopolitical competition between different external actors. While the French military withdrew from Mali\, Niger\, and Burkina Faso\, and the USA was also forced to leave Niger and Chad\, the Wagner Group and other Russian troops arrived in the region to replace Western actors. Surprisingly\, Hungary declared its ambitions to establish a footprint in the Sahel as well. \nThis seminar will highlight the following topics: What are the goals of the new Hungarian commitment in Chad? How does it fit the political\, geopolitical\, and security interests of Budapest?
