The Zimbabwe Conflict Insight looks at how the unpopular economic reforms of the early 2000s, and the resulting turmoil and economic decline, acted as a catalyst for the military intervention that overthrew Robert Mugabe's government in November 2017. "If Zimbabwe is to move forward and ensure sustainable peace and stability, the new leadership must go beyond economic reforms and address deeply entrenched insecurities by building the public's confidence in state institutions, and minimizing the military's role in politics".
