For the fifth consecutive year, IPSS has been ranked among the top 50 think tanks in Sub-Saharan Africa. IPSS first made its debut to the Global Go To Think Tank Index in 2014, eight years after the Institute’s establishment in 2007.

IPSS has been ranked among other distinguished think tanks, namely the Ethiopian Development Research Institute (EDRI), the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), the Rift Valley Institute (RVI), the Organization for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa (OSSREA), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), and the Institute of Security Studies (ISS). IPSS extends congratulatory wishes to all 97 selected think tanks in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Our mission is to offer quality education and capacity training in the specialized field of peace and security to students and other stakeholders, as well as foster peace and security through research, policy dialogues and outreach activities in Ethiopia and across Africa. Through the Africa Peace and Security Programme (APSP), IPSS has an Memorandum of Understanding with the African Union to take up the intellectual challenge of defining African-centred Solutions (AfSol) through training, research and advocacy around African peace and security issues.

IPSS also serves as the Tana Forum Secretariat, providing physical, technical and logistical support to the team. The Forum is an annual high-level gathering of African leaders and decision-makers to deliberate on African solutions to peace and security challenges.

The Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) of the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, USA examines the evolving role and character of public policy research organizations in its annual Global Go To Think Tank Index Report. The index is based on a three-phase survey undertaken by politicians, scientists, think tank donors, and think tanks.
