On 1 October 2019, IPSS welcomed the 8th cohort of the joint MA and PhD in Global Studies offered by Addis Ababa University/Leipzig University. The new cohort includes 12 students (7 men, 5 women) from Cameroon, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Nigeria, Germany and Ethiopia. The programme has also accepted 4 exchange students from different European universities.
The introductory session included a welcome address by Dr. Yonas Adyae, IPSS Director and an orientation by Dr. Daniel Gebreegziabher, Coordinator of MA and PhD in Global Studies at IPSS, and Dr. Claudia Baumann, Research Associate and Programme Coordinator of Global Studies at Leipzig University.
In 2012, Addis Ababa University and the University of Leipzig launched the Joint Master's Programme in Global Studies with a special emphasis on Peace and Security in Africa. The initiative counts as the only joint programme offered with a German university in Africa in the social sciences. Globalization processes have implications for security in Africa, and linking peace and security to global studies creates an opportunity to analyze both the special and global dimensions of peace and security in Africa.
Global Studies is a multidisciplinary approach which aims to contribute to globalization research by critically challenging existing narratives and orthodoxies about globalization. In addition to contributing to the ongoing analytical and intellectual debate on globalisation, Global Studies lends practical relevance by offering a unique vantage point which helps in critically examining contemporary global challenges transcending national boundaries.
