The MPSA Executive MA offers experienced professionals working on African peace and security issues a unique opportunity to acquire certified and in-depth training while continuing to work in their respective organizations. The MPSA training prepares critical, reflective practitioners with the skills to provide new cost-effective and creative solutions for complex and dynamic problems.

If your answer to the above questions is yes, then the MPSA Programme is the right academic programme for you. The Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) is currently accepting applications for the 15th cohort intake. The application deadline is 21 June 2019 and the Programme will commence on 6 October 2019.

Step 1: Prepare the required documents listed below (in PDF)

  • Passport photo (minimum 720×1280 pixels)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Letter of motivation (1 page maximum)
  • Copies of relevant degrees and certificates
  • Official academic transcripts (Bachelors/Masters/PhD)
  • Letter of consent signed by the supervisor at your organization (download here)
  • Any other materials to fulfil your application process e.g. 2 references

Selection criteria

1. Academic requirements: Bachelor’s or Post-graduate degree from accredited institution of higher learning.

2. Non-academic requirements:

The applicant must preferably:
  • Be a citizen of a member state of the African Union or an international applicant working for a governmental, inter- governmental or multilateral agency with a keen interest in African peace and security issues;
  • Have at least five years’ work experience in peace, security and development, democracy, governance, peace and security or related field;
  • Have excellent command of English language which is the medium of instruction.

The Selection Committee will also take into account the following factors:

  • Applicant’s past and current job, position/responsibilities; including perceived professional impact applicant is likely to have on their organization after completion of the executive Master’s programme;
  • Diversity (gender, regional balance – RECs and Regional Mechanisms) in order to draw participants from all parts of the continent;
  • Applicant’s personal qualities: leadership, strong motivation to enhance one’s professional abilities, originality, sound academic credentials.
Please note:

Upon acceptance, all candidates shall be required to follow the under-listed procedures to authenticate their degrees and certificates.

  1. Get your degree and transcript authenticated by the university where you acquired your degree;
  2. Once, step (1) is completed, have your authenticated degree and transcript certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the country you acquired your degree;
  3. The certified degree and transcript should then be sent to the Ethiopian Embassy in the country you acquired your certificate. The documents should be stamped and certified at the Embassy;
  4. Once step (3) is completed, the certified copies should be sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Addis Ababa for another certification (This can be done during the first semester);
  5. Once the above processes have been completed, your degree and transcripts will be sent to the Higher Education Relevance and Quality Agency (HERQA) in Ethiopia to complete the authentication process;

For participants who acquired their degree in Ethiopia, kindly request the university to send an official copy of the degree and transcripts to IPSS.
